Hvítárnes
Hvítárnes hut, built in 1930, is the oldest mountain shelter operated by Ferðafélag Íslands (The Iceland Touring Association, FÍ). With its turf roof, the hut is a legally protected site due to its historical and cultural significance. The two-story hut can accommodate up to 30 people. On the ground floor, there’s an entryway, two bunk-bed rooms, and a small kitchen. The upper floor consists of a small private room and a larger dormitory area with floor mattresses. The kitchen is equipped with cold running water, a gas stove, a wood-burning stove, and basic utensils. Visitors must carry out all their waste, as leaving trash behind is not permitted. A separate building houses the toilet, located a short distance from the main hut, near the warden’s cabin. The nearby campsite is also situated by the toilet. The hut offers stunning views and serves as either the starting or ending point of the historic Kjölur Hiking Trail.
