Built in 2004 to mark the completion of the walking bridge from Eskifell by Einstigi, the hut sits at the final link connecting the Skaftafell highlands to nearby towns, making it a natural stop on one of Iceland's most rewarding highland routes. The hut sleeps 20 in bunk beds and is booked as a single unit, making it ideal for groups. The kitchen is equipped with a gas stove and kitchenware. Water is sourced from the surrounding nature, and an outdoor toilet is located beside the hut. Frá október til júní er aðeins hægt að komast að skálanum með sérútbúnum ökutækjum (breyttum 4x4 „superjeppum“), á vélsleðum, á skíðum eða fótgangandi. Hefðbundnir bílar komast ekki að skálanum á þessu tímabili. Vinsamlega athugið einnig að rennandi vatn gæti ekki verið í boði þessa mánuði og þjónusta er takmörkuð. There are many hiking trails are in the area. Austurstræti, the main route through Viðidalur, Kollumúla, Eskifell to inhabited areas. A days hike to Suðurfjall, Hnappadalstindur and Jökulgilstindar. It is also possible to hike a circular route in along Hafragil and out along Jökulsárgljúfur.
Interesting sites in the area include ruins of old settlements in Eskifell from the mid-19th century. Gabbro rock formations in Hafragil. As well as views from the top of Eskifell over the watersheds of Skyndidalsá and Jökulsá.
