Fimmvörðuháls
Fimmvörðuskáli hut is ideally located near the highest point of the Fimmvörðuháls trail, right between Skógar and Þórsmörk (Básar). This makes it a perfect stopover for splitting the 25 km hike into two days. Alternatively, guests can use the hut as a base for several nights to explore the surrounding area with shorter day hikes. Keep in mind that Fimmvörðuháls sits at an elevation of over 1,000 meters, where weather conditions can shift rapidly—even in summer. It's essential to be properly equipped with suitable clothing and gear, check the forecast beforehand, and inform someone of your plans. Ideally, submit a travel plan at Safetravel.is. The main hiking season runs from early June to late August. Outside of this window, winter conditions can prevail, and the trail is only recommended for well-prepared and experienced hikers. Please note that the hut does not offer any food services, and there is no built-in water supply. Water is only available from rain collected on the roof or melting snow, so it is crucial to bring enough drinking water with you. You may be able to refill bottles from open streams on the southern side of the trail, but there are no streams north of the hut.
