Bæli (Geo Hut)
Bæli, also known as The Geo Hut, is a charming mountain hut located in the Hengill area—remarkably close to Reykjavík, yet still offering a truly remote and peaceful atmosphere. Hengill is known for its geothermal activity and renowned for its geothermal power plant, one of the largest in the world. Hengill area offers various hiking trails that showcase Iceland's unique volcanic terrain. Built by a local scout group in the 1950s, the hut was fully rebuilt from the ground up in 2012 and remains proudly owned by the Scouts. Bæli is a cozy retreat, comfortably accommodating 10 to 12 people. With brand new mattresses and recent interior decoration, the hut has been thoughtfully designed to enhance its warm, inviting character—making it an ideal base for nature lovers and hikers exploring this geothermal landscape.

Facilities
The hut comfortably accommodates 10 to 12 guests, featuring three bunk beds that sleep 10 people—comprising four doubles and two singles. There's also a "long bed" that can sleep two additional guests if needed. All mattresses are brand new, offering a great night's rest. Guests should bring their own sleeping bags or duvets, though a full bedding set (duvets, sheets, and linens) is available for rent upon request.
Please note that this is an authentic mountain hut experience—off the grid and without electricity. Heating is provided by gas, with a wood-burning stove coming soon. Lighting is atmospheric, with plenty of candles creating a warm and cozy environment. Basic sanitary facilities are available, consisting of a portable toilet located in a separate outhouse. You should bring your own drinking water.

Pricing & Cancellations
A minimum booking of four guests is required. Additional guests are charged individually beyond that. It is also possible to book the entire hut for private use. Price per person is ISK 7.500.

Opening season and access
Bæli Hut is located in the scenic Hengill area, just a few kilometers off the Ring Road (Route #1), between Reykjavík and Hveragerði. It takes only about 30 minutes to drive from Reykjavík to the hut. Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive detailed directions and information on how to reach the hut.
Vehicle access is possible from May to October.
How to Get There
1. With a 4×4 Vehicle
If you're traveling in a proper 4×4 off-road vehicle with high ground clearance and four-wheel drive, you can usually drive all the way to the hut. Be aware that the last 500 meters (1,500 ft) can be a bit tricky and may challenge your off-road driving skills—but it’s manageable for most.
2. With a Standard Car or SUV
Regular cars can reach up to 500 meters (1,500 ft) from the hut, where you’ll find a spot to park and then walk the short remaining distance. If you have an SUV, you can typically get even closer—around 150 meters (450 ft) from the hut—leaving just a brief uphill walk to your destination.
3. Hiking, Biking & Skiing
The hut is also easily accessible by foot or bike, with several excellent trails in the surrounding area. In winter, it’s reachable via cross-country skiing, offering a peaceful escape during the snowy season. No matter how you get there, Bæli Hut provides a unique and cozy base for outdoor adventures year-round.

Just 20 minutes from Reykjavík, the Hengill mountain area is a geothermal wonderland known for its volcanic landscapes, bubbling mud pools, and steaming vents. It’s a paradise for hikers and bikers, with colorful rhyolite trails winding through lava fields and geothermal rivers. The nearby Hellisheiði Geothermal Exhibition offers fascinating insight into Iceland’s renewable energy, with interactive displays inside one of the world’s largest geothermal power plants. For a relaxing escape, Reykjadalur or "Steam Valley"—features a natural hot river where visitors can soak in warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by stunning Icelandic scenery.
