Álftavötn
Álftavötn Hut was originally built as a shelter for farmers herding sheep in the highlands. It was renovated several years ago by Útivist members and has since become a warm and inviting place to stay. While there is no permanent warden stationed at Álftavötn, the warden from the nearby Strútur hut oversees its maintenance. NOTE that this hut is NOT on the Laugavegur trek!

Opening season and access
The most accessible route to Álftavötn begins in Skaftártunga via the F208 road. Just north of the Hólaskjól highland center, turn left onto F233. This route includes a crossing over the unbridged Syðri-Ófæra river. Those not familiar with the river should seek advice on the safest crossing point—staff at Hólaskjól are likely to be able to help. After crossing the river, turn left onto a track that leads close to the hut; the final 200 meters must be covered on foot.
Only well-equipped 4x4 vehicles or larger off-road vehicles are capable of driving to the hut.
