Áfangagil

Áfangagil Hut is a rustic mountain shelter situated along the Hellismannaleið trail in Iceland’s central highlands. This hut serves as a convenient overnight stop for hikers traversing the 55 km route between Rjúpnavellir and Landmannalaugar. It is also ideal stop-over for those that plan to travel to the Landmannalaugar area. The hut lies approximately 5 km from road no. 26 and about 3 km from Landmannaleið (F225). The hut is known for its distinctive Icelandic turf-roof design, blending seamlessly into the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Opening season and access

We recommend using 4x4 when driving to Áfangagil. However, no rivers need to be crossed and the distance from main road is less than 10 km .

The opening season of the huts depends on when the Icelandic Road Authority opens the road and that in turn depends on snow conditions and general conditions of the road itself. On average one can assume that the hut is easily accessed from May until October.

The huts are closed and locked during the winter time, but can be rented if one has the means (e.g. skis, super jeep or snowmobile) to reach it during the winter time.
